WordPress Theme SuperMini reloaded

A long time ago Smashing Magazine listed 100 of the best WordPress themes. That list totally kicked ass to be honest. At one point I decided to restyle my poetry site. I took a look at their list and when I found the SuperMini theme, my choice was immediately made.

After I downloaded the theme I realized a lot of features were missing: No searchbox, no searchresults page, no archives, no global archives, no blogroll support, no pages support, no 404 pages and a few design flaws…

I actually went on, and built those things myself. Later on I wanted to contact the orginal author (Patrick Behrend) of the theme to send him my updates but by the time I got to send my mail, his site was down and he completely dissappeared from the web. I never received an aswer regarding the theme updates I sent him.

UPDATE: Patrick commented in on this post and I got in touch with him. Patrick seemed pleased I kept the theme alive. I updated the URL in the footer which now links to Patrick’s (new) site. Make sure you go check it out and leave him a comment ;-)

By now the original download isn’t even online anymore, and Smashing Magazine disabled the link to the SuperMini theme (as it is a 404). So I recently decided to finish the theme, and translate it back to English and re-publish it. I thought the initial theme was awesome, and I figured it would be cool if other people would be able to actually use the completed theme.

I think Patrick did a great job designing a very clean and simple theme, which doesn’t look like most other WordPress themes.

ScreenshotIt’s a one column theme, showing the latest post. Other posts are shown, but only the title and post date is visible.Pages and blogroll links are also featured in the same column, in almost the same style as the links to the other posts.

The searchbox is initially hidden and replaced by text in order to keep the layout as clean as possible.
Clicking the search links reveals the search box.

Sidebar Preview The list of other posts, blogroll links, pages, and the searchbox is set up as clean as possible, yet very transparent.
(Click to see the different sections)
You can enable the Archives page by adding a new page (leave it empty), and then choosing the ‘Archives’ page template.

The comments area is as clean as the rest of the theme. No gravaters in order to keep the comments area pretty light.

I hope you guys like it. Feel free to report bugs, or browser errors.

    Hi!

Nice theme and nice work, thankyou!

    2 problems/questions:

    - if you are using the ie7 (some still do…) the “hello-world” jpg is not visible, any idea?
    - what about the “wallpaper.php” and “wallpaper.swf”, at the moment they have no function?

    Thanx
    Ben

  • Ronny says:

-IE7: good call… I shall look into that asap! I’ll keep you posted.
-Wallpaper shouldn’t be in there… Nothing to worry about. (Something I was playing around with, but I decided not to keep it in there).

Awesome thanks for your feedback. Will look into that IE7 thing asap!

  • Ben says:

    Thanks for the reply!

I think the wallpaper.swf would be nice as a background, but don´t know yet how to realise that, can you or somebody give me a hint?
    Thanx
    Ben

  • Ronny says:

Take a look at my home page (http://noCreativity.com). You should find the same ‘wallpaper.swf’ in the source ;)

  • Ben says:

I recently updated the theme, and fixed the header image bug.
Enjoy :) (download link of the updated version is the same as above ;) )

  • Ben says:

    Thankyou und Danke Ronny!

I think if, using some form of script, the older posts can be displayed dynamically on-the-spot and then hidden (replaced by another post) when another post on the list is clicked.

    Great theme anyhow.

    Hi,

    two questions:

    1. how to put the following code in index.php to add widgets? if ( !function_exists(‘dynamic_sidebar’)
    || !dynamic_sidebar() ) :

    2. I found in the header.php there is a function calling to archives… but no-one archive is showed in the theme…

    Thank you!

    Hey!

First, this is a awsome Theme!

Second, i have a problem with the Archives i think:
if i browse my tags, there is only a page that show the empty inbox of “Archives” nothing more.

    so whats the problem? :(

see it at the example: http://www.lordmat.de/tag/lordmat

    greetings
    mat

  • Ronny says:

    Hi Lordmat.
You have to switch the page template for your arhive page from ‘Default’ to ‘Archives Page’ in the wordpress admin.

    Go to your WP-admin.
    Click ‘Edit pages’
    Choose your archives page
Click the following combobox to switch templates: http://snapplr.com/3g23
    Save the page
    Enjoy your Archive! :)

  • lordmat says:

Hey, thx for ur fast answer!

I’ve created the page for the archives and yes i see now the archives!
But if i go back to my Example, there is stil the empty archives page and it doesnt show me the posts, that have the selected tag :(

  • Ronny says:

Oh I think I get the problem. I don’t think the archives show tags yet… I think I’ve only fixed the Categories… I’ll check it out asap and see what I can do.

Thanks a ton for your work! I was looking for a minimalist, yet cool design. This is it. Just a couple of questions: I want to be able to post a video in my entries, and to have the share buttons as in some of the cases shown (pervart, for example). Also, it occurs to me that it would be neat if the heather text could be random… any tips on how to achieve this would be much appreciated.

Best, and again, many thanks and lots of encouragement,

    Ed

Thanks for releasing this updated theme. Now it’s 2010 with wordpress 3 and i’m going to use this theme in a new site. If I make drastic changes to make it work with the new menu-system etc i’ll let you know :) You can have the updated files back :)

  • Ronny says:

I’m glad you like it! It would be very cool if you updated the theme a bit! I’d be happy to see some contribution to this very potential theme. A lot of people have already done crazy things with it. Feel free to raise the bar ;)
