It took a little over a year, but it’s finally here: Dooodl 1.1.0 1.1.1 is a fact!
What has been done?

• You can now manage the Dooodl’s that were submitted to your blog.
• I even went one better: There’s now an option that enables you to first approve Dooodls before they appear on the site.
• You can choose to get an email everytime a new Dooodl is submitted (with links to approve, disapprove or delete the new Dooodl)
• Your blog, your style: You can make the Flash Gallery and the HTML gallery look exactly the way you want (well, you can choose the colors )
• What’s better than choosing the colors of the gallery? Being able to completely edit the look of the widget so it fits into your theme perfectly!
• Don’t like the Flash gallery? Disable it in the Dooodl settings. Hurray for Flash-haters!
• Previous versions would load all Dooodls at once. That is now history: I added endless scrolling to the HTML version: People with lots of Dooodls will have less trouble showing the HTML version from now on.

I’m really excited about this release because Dooodl has now finally grown up. It’s able to fit in to your theme using the different options.
It finally fits your philosophy too as from now on you can choose to moderate them!

If you haven’t got Dooodl yet, but this release sparks some love for a fun plugin, I’d say: Go get it! It’s free and it will be a good laugh. More than 4200 downloads can’t be wrong!

Oh and by the way: I wanted to take a moment and thank every single one of you guys for downloading and installing the plugin! Seeing that many people use something I created really excites me to make things even better! Thanks for the continuous support and suggestions! You guys rock!

[Update]

A few people commented they didn’t get the widget to show up in the sidebar automatically. That’s because you need to add it to the sidebar yourself. But don’t worry: It’s easy!

• Go to the WP-admin
• Go to the Appearance panel
• Select the Widgets-submenu
• Drag the Dooodl-widget into your sidebar
• Done. Ready. Finito. Party!!!

If you don’t see a sidebar in your widget-manager, it means your theme is not widget ready. In that case you can use the Dooodl PHP template tags, somewhere in your theme (yes I really thought of everything!) where you’d like the widget to show up. Use this code:

I really screwed up yesterday. I updated the Dooodl plugin and commited it to SVN. After having done that I wanted to wait until the changes reflected on the WordPress site (which sometimes takes a few minutes). However I had to go over to Ward for dinner, so I took my laptop…

When arrived there I checked the site back and saw the changes. I updated the plugin on my site immediately using the WP-plugin auto-update functionality. That’s when all hell broke loose…
I saw that all the doodle-images on my site were gone, but the userdata (in the database) remained. When checking the FTP I realized what happened… The images are saved inside the plugin folder in a folder called ‘doodls’. Once you let WordPress update the plugin automatically it tells you it ‘removed the old version of the plugin‘, before it ‘upgraded the plugin succesfully‘. It actually removes everything in that directory. I did NOT know that! I expected the plugin to replace all the existing files with new files and add the missing files/folders. And that’s why everything saved by the plugin was was lost once updated…

In my case I immediately lost about 120 doodles you guys submitted. Lucky for me I took a backup only half an hour before running the upgrade . In the end I only lost 11 images. I hope I’m the only one who ran into this misery.

But now…
There’s a new version online (1.0.5) (1.0.6  featuring smaller brushes ) which will not have that issue anymore. But before running off and installing this version please take a look at this and please be absolutely sure to have a backup of your doodles before installing ANY other version of the plugin…

1. Before updating, download the /wp-content/plugins/dooodl/doodls/ folder. This folder contains all doodles your users saved. If you don’t, you will lose all images your users saved.
2. Create a folder in /wp-content/uploads/ and name it ‘doodls‘.
3. Upload the images to this(/wp-content/uploads/doodls/) folder.
4. Now you can upgrade the new version of the plugin.

Again: I’m terribly sorry about all this and I really hope you didn’t lose (too much) of your doodles. I already tested 1.0.6 and it’s working perfectly. If you safely copy/backup the folder with doodles (using the steps above) then you should be safe

Having said all this…

If you got any feedback or information on how WordPress updates itself and plugins, do let me know. I really wouldn’t like running into this kind of trouble again…

I have been thinking about this for some time. A few weeks ago I was browsing Kris‘ site and found the answer to this guestbook-problem in the sidebar: A Doodle-wall. He allows his visitors to draw a little doodle and save it to the sidebar. Better yet: He built a history-browser too which allows you to browse all doodles through time.

I loved the idea and the philosophy behind this and went to build my own. I just finished the first part of Dooodl (this is the name of the official WordPress plugin coming out sometime soon ) and it’s already running in the sidebar! Feel free to test it and save some doodles! If you run into any kind of bugs or unpleasant problems, let me know!

Ik ben benieuwd of mensen met een site op wordpress.com zelf deze plugin in gebruik kunnen nemen.

Daar heb ik een tijdje over zitten denken. Vooral omdat ik momenteel nog altijd op WordPress 2.3.1 draai, en ondertussen 2.5.1 al uit is. Normaal zou ik gewoon updaten, maar K2/True Blue (mijn huidige Theme & style) zijn wat kapot in 2.5.1. Zelf de errors wegwerken zie ik niet zitten, dus ik zal wel een nieuw theme moeten kiezen als ik wil updaten. En dat brengt dan het ‘probleem’ mee. Ik zou dat nieuwe theme meteen moeten aanpassen om die Flash movie in te bouwen.

Daarenboven heeft Imke Dielen enkele weken geblogged over de de bunny balk. Toen besloot ik om er een WordPress Widget voor te maken. En zo geschiedde het.

Installatie

1. Pak de zip uit.
2. Upload de ‘MakeTheBunnyTalk’ map naar ‘wp-contents/plugins/’ map in je WordPress installatie.
3. Ga naar je WP-admin, en activeer de plugin
4. Ga naar de Widgets-panel en voeg de ‘Make the bunny talk’ widget toe aan een sidebar.
5. Open de opties van de widget en vul de naam, serienummer en token van je Nabaztag bunny in.
6. Klaar!

• Het serienummer van je Nabaztag vindt op de onderkant van je Nabaztag.
• De token vind je op deze pagina ( bij Nabazphere)(Vergeet niet ‘externe services van Nabazphere’ aan te vinken).
• De ‘Use SWFObject.js’ optie is er voor mensen die al andere Flash bestanden op hun blog weergeven, en dat aan de hand van SWFObject.js doen. Als je niet weet wat dit is, kun je deze optie beter op ‘ja’ laten staan.

Door het succes van de voorbije jaren zal Multi-Mania dit jaar uit 4 tracks bestaan! De line-up is redelijk mind-blowing als je het mij vraagt, maar ik ben dan ook snel enthousiast.

Multi-Mania is gratis, maar registreren is verplicht. Dat zal dan ook kunnen vanaf 28 april.
Heb jij een kickass project gemaakt dat rijp is voor een stoere Multi-Mania award? Er zijn 4 open categorieën waar je je werk in kan zenden, en de greep naar de gewilde award kan wagen.

Er is ook een badge te downloaden op de Multi-Mania site. Ikzelf heb deze even in een simpele WordPress plugin gestoken zodat het implementeren in je sidebar wat sneller gaat. (Getest op WordPress 2.3.3 en 2.5)

1. Download de widget hier.
2. Unzip het bestand, en upload de ‘2M08-Attendee‘ map volledig naar je ‘wp-content/plugins/‘ map
3. Ga naar je WP-Admin, en activeer de plugin
4. Ga naar presentation > widgets waar je de 2M08 widget in je sidebar kan slepen.
5. Opslaan
6. Je bent klaar

Ikzelf zal aanwezig zijn. Zul jij er zijn?

Er waren enkele onvolmaaktheden (zoals de Copy-Paste bug waarbij de nummering van de HTML werd meegeplakt) die er nu ook uit zijn. Ik heb nog altijd geen menu ingebouwd waar je de CSS kan bepalen die de opmaak van de code regelt. Ik ben er ook over aan het denken om de hele GeSHi mogelijkheden in te bouwen, zodat je via de WP-admin heel wat opties zelf kunt bepalen.

Maar dat is dus voor een andere keer

Over de BB Syntax Highlighter
Deze plugin laat je toe om meer dan 50 programmeer- en scripttalen te hightlighten op een bbCode achtige manier. Deze plugin is gebaseerd op de GeSHi class: een open-source klasse die het toelaat om makkelijk aan code-hightlighting te doen. Zou met de meeste recente WordPress releases moeten werken. Ik heb alleen nog maar getest op mijn WordPress versie (2.3.1).

Installatie is nog altijd dezelfde:

1. Upload de ‘bbSyntaxHiglighter’ map naar je ‘wp-contents/plugins’ map op je server.
2. Ga naar je WP-Admin en login.
3. Ga naar het ‘Plugins’ menu, en activeer de nieuwe plugin.
4. Klaar.

Veel plezier ermee.

Zo of zo ik wou die badge ook hebben, dus heb ik besloten om er snel zelf een widget voor te maken, en dat is ook gelukt. Dit is dan ook meteen mijn eerste WordPress widget die ik gemaakt heb.

De widget kun je gewoon uploaden, activeren, en in je presenatie menu op z’n plaats in de sidebar slepen. In de instellingen kan je de gebruikersnaam opslaan zodat de badge meteen naar jouw pagina op Twitter linkt.

Installatie:

1. Download en pak de ZIP file uit.
2. Upload de map ‘DoYouFollowMe’ naar de plugin map (/wp-contents/plugins/)
3. Ga naar het presentatie menu in de WordPress administratie, en kies ‘Widgets’.
4. Sleep de ‘Do you follow me?’-widget in de sidebar.
5. Klik op de ‘Instellingen’-knop van de widget en voer je Twitter gebruikersnaam in.
6. Verlaat het menu, en klik op ‘Wijzigingen opslaan’.
7. Klaar!

Spontaan dacht ik aan categorieën, maar dan krijg je meteen die vervelende ‘/category/’ in je URL. Dat vond ik niet bepaald aantrekkelijk. Verder wou ik zelf ook nog wat tekst als inleiding op de inhoud erbij hebben. Dat kan je niet doen via de WP-Admin (wat voor mij juist belangrijk is om redenen als useability).

Ik ging dus op zoek naar een plugin voor WordPress (waar ik mijn project op baseer). Ik wist al van Aral Balkan’s plugin voor inline posts af, maar ik wist niet echt of dit mijn probleem uit de wereld kon helpen. Je raadt het al. Dat lukte niet hoe ik wou. Ik heb dan Aral’s plugin maar bijgewerkt zodat hij deed wat ik wou.

Het leuke is dat de plugin nog altijd zoals ervoor werkt, en hij nu ook categorieën kan includen in één en dezelfde post of pagina!
Alle gekheid op een stokje kan deze plugin nu de meest zeldzame combinaties in 1 post of pagina aan:

• Meerdere posts in 1 post of pagina
• Een categorie van posts in een post of pagina
• Een post en een categorie van posts in een post of pagina
• Meerdere categorieën in een posts of pagina
• Zo kan ik wel nog even doorgaan
