Doodling evolved

The few people that follow me on Twitter have probably seen me tweet about an upcoming site called ‘Draw A Doodle’. I could try to explain everything about what I’m planning to do, but why bother if I could just save you 8 minutes and just show you what I want to really to create?

One of my latest school assignment was to create a site where users can create news-content. (Me being way too excited to have actually paid attention, I read users should be able to create new content… Turns out my lecturers really wanted NEWS content… ) In this assignment, I saw the perfect opportunity to create the basics of the Draw A Doodle project. So I did…

I really put in a lot of effort into detail and animations. Nearing the end of the deadline I had to cut some corners… I had to leave out the layer-rearranging system in the Doodle Creator, I didn’t get to take care of all tab-indices, I had to skip the scrollbar for the users-list and the comments-lists, etc.

Oh god… I was going to cut right through the chase and show you the project! How did I end up telling the story of my life again? Well anyway: Pictures!


This is probably the biggest and most exciting project I have done for school. It consists of 84 dedicated classes (meaning I don’t count open source libs like TweenLite or my util classes). That’s a total of 5 120 lines of code or 384 kb of class files. Those are numbers that actually blew my mind once I realized what I actually did. I think this is the biggest thing I’ve created so far… And it turned out to be a way better project than I expected. I’m really proud of the result so far. I’ll be working on this over the coming weeks in order to finally launch the actual site at DrawADoodle.be.

I have some great plans on integration with the existing Wordpress plugin, Dooodl. I’m really looking forward to sharing that with you.

Mooi zeg! Echt goed! De painting tool lijkt ook een stuk beter dan in de laatste (wordpress) versie. Wellicht nog een eraser-tool? daar zat ik net naar te zoeken kwam ik achter bij het tekenen.
Ik had nog een andere vraag. Kan ik de doodle widget in wordpress ook gebruiken zonder widget? dus doormiddel van een functie (if function existist). Ik ben bezig de generaalpardon.com site over te zetten naar dagtekening.nl en daar heb ik geen widgets ruimte voor aan staan zeg maar.

Ehm, uit mijn hoofd herinner ik me wel dat ik dat heb geenabled.
De editor zelf staat gewoon in de /blog/wp-content/plugins/dooodl/creator/ map. Dus van daar ga je gewoon de HTML code kunnen overnemen. Zolang je binnen een WP omgeving ontwikkelt zal alles gewoon blijven werken.

Pff, zo uit mijn hoofd kan ik je niets garanderen moet ik eerlijk toegeven. Ik heb het ontwikkeld met wp-widgets in het achterhoofd, dus heb nooit echt aan ‘non-widget’ themes gedacht. Zou het eigelijk eens moeten proberen.

Alsk er in het weekend tijd voor heb ga’k het eens testen.
Als je niet zolang kunt wachten: probeer het gewoon. Als je problemen ontdekt, laat maar weten en kga zien om het dan asap te fixen voor je ;)

Eraser tool zou er idd eens moeten aankomen, maar is net iets ingewikkelder ;)

Bedankt. Ik ga er naar kijken. Dat zou moeten lukken dan wel. Ik zou eventueel wel een widget enablede ruimte kunnen maken daarvoor… maar ik vind het zo mooi nu zo zonder widgets in het admin gedeelte.
Ik zal ook pas na het weekend er naar kunnen kijken denk ik. Dus heeft sowieso geen haast. Ik laat het even weten wanneer het gelukt is of niet.

You’re talking about localizations? At this point I haven’t implemented any language support. I will look into this at some point, but I can’t promise this right now.
